New Delhi, Feb. 6 -- : Misleading or poorly backed health claims are widespread in India's packaged food sector, and everyday staples such as honey, ghee, tea and edible oils are among the worst offenders, according to a new study that analysed thousands of food labels.
The study which examined 5,058 labelling claims across 18 food categories, found that 33.6 per cent were either non-compliant with regulations or could not be backed by adequate evidence. Of these, 21.3 per cent were found to violate rules, while another 12.3 per cent required further verification.
