Shimla, March 24 -- The Jal Shakti Vibhag has emerged as the largest defaulter of electricity bills in Himachal Pradesh, accounting for an overwhelming share of the government's pending power dues, according to an official reply tabled in the Assembly.

Electricity refers to the supply of power provided by the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) for operating public infrastructure, water supply schemes, and essential government services.

As per the data, total outstanding electricity dues from government departments, boards, and institutions stood at Rs 495.76 crore as of February 28, 2026. Of this, the Jal Shakti Vibhag alone owes Rs 455.91 crore, contributing more than 90 per cent of the total liability.
