Mumbai, May 1 -- Severe traffic congestion was witnessed on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway from Friday morning, triggered by the Maharashtra Day holiday followed by the weekend rush, leading to a sharp surge in vehicular movement.

The situation affected several commuters, including Nationalist Congress Party MP Supriya Sule, who remained stranded in traffic for nearly three hours and consequently failed to reach the Maharashtra Day flag-hoisting programme on time.

With a continuous three-day holiday period, the number of vehicles on the expressway rose significantly. The situation was further aggravated by traffic diversions at certain points due to the inauguration of the 'missing link' project.
