Chandigarh, Nov. 10 -- Alarmed by the rising number of road accidents in Haryana, the state's Director General of Police (DGP) Shatrujeet Kapur has ordered a state-wide campaign against reckless and drunken driving, calling the spate of crashes a "human-created calamity."According to police data, more than 4,000 people have lost their lives in traffic mishaps between January and October this year, five times higher than deaths from violent crimes.
In response, the DGP has instructed traffic units to intensify enforcement and ensure that those caught drunk driving or speeding face immediate jail terms of up to 20 days.
