Hamirpur (HP), April 4 -- Advance preparation for prompt and effective rescue and relief operations during earthquakes and other natural disasters is essential to minimise the loss of life and property, a government official said while speaking at a programme commemorating the 121st anniversary of the devastating earthquake that struck Himachal Pradesh's Kangra Valley on April 4, 1905.

Gandharva Rathore, Hamirpur Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), said the earthquake that struck Kangra 121 years ago was a major tragedy. At that time, no disaster management system existed, nor was there any awareness among the general public.
