New Delhi, March 18 -- The government on Wednesday said the Cinematograph (Amendment) Act, 2023 has significantly strengthened the legal framework to curb film piracy, with offenders facing up to three years of imprisonment and fines that may extend to five per cent of a film's production cost.

In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Dr. L. Murugan said new provisions under the Act prohibit unauthorised recording and transmission of films. He noted that violations attract a minimum punishment of three months' imprisonment and a fine of Rs 3 lakh, which can be extended to three years in jail along with a higher financial penalty linked to production costs.
