Washington, May 6 -- The latest Republican plan to allocate $1 billion for security upgrades tied to President Donald Trump's proposed White House ballroom has sparked the ire of House Democrats, who have accused the GOP of using taxpayer money to bankroll a prestige project tied to the president.
The funding is included in an $82 billion reconciliation package released by Chuck Grassley, the Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The proposal would provide money for "enhancements" linked to the East Wing Modernisation Project, the formal name attached to the ballroom development.
