Gaza, May 2 -- More than 90% of Gaza residents are facing critical food shortages, while another 65% do not have access to clean drinking water, Director General of the Gaza Health Ministry Munir al-Barash said, adding that the current situation allows the United Nations to recognize the Gaza Strip as a famine zone.
"About 91% of Gaza residents are facing critical food shortages, another 65% do not have access to clean drinking water. About 92% of children and nursing mothers suffer from acute food shortages, which poses a direct threat to their lives," al-Barash told the Anadolu news agency on Thursday, calling on the UN "to officially recognize the Gaza Strip as a famine zone."
