Pankaj JainNew Delhi, April 8 -- India's waste management system is undergoing a significant overhaul with a new set of Solid Waste Management Rules coming into force from April 1, 2026 marking a decisive shift towards stricter segregation, scientific processing, and accountability across the waste chain.

In a statement, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) said the updated rules aim to strengthen waste management practices nationwide, with a strong focus on segregation at source, improved recycling, and minimising landfill dependence.

At the heart of the reforms is a mandatory four-stream waste segregation system, a step up from the earlier two-bin model.
