Bengaluru, March 27 -- The Impact Player rule debate took centre stage ahead of the IPL opener, with Royal Challengers Bengaluru head coach Andy Flower backing the innovation for its tactical value but cautioning that it "hides" one of cricket's core challenges - balancing a playing XI.
Speaking on the eve of RCB's campaign, Flower said the rule adds intrigue for teams and fans but alters the traditional complexity of selection.
"It's been an interesting addition tactically, but one of the beauties of cricket is balancing your XI. The Impact Player can hide that selection problem a little," he said, noting that the trade-offs between batting depth, bowling options and fielding standards are central to the sport.
