Shillong, Aug. 4 -- Five members of a family, including a toddler, were killed after a vehicle plunged into a deep gorge along the Shillong-Dawki Road in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district late yesterday night, police said today.



The family was returning to Lyngkyrdem Laitlyting village from Meghalaya's capital Shillong.



The accident occurred at Rngain, around 9 pm, when the car bearing registration number ML05 U 4926 veered off a dangerous curve and fell into the gorge.



A police official said the mishap occurred when the weather was very foggy, and it is suspected that the vehicle went off the road due to poor visibility, and moreover the portion of the under construction road was without protective guardrails.
