Aizawl, March 9 -- An 89-year-old woman was killed when a devastating fire engulfed two residential buildings in Vairengte, a border town in Kolasib district.

The victim, identified as Lali, was alone inside one of the Assam-type houses when the fire broke out on Saturday night. With most of her family members away for work, she was unable to escape due to her frailty and was burned alive. Three other families residing in the two buildings were fortunate to have been away at the time, averting further casualties.

Her funeral was conducted at Vairengte IOC Veng locality on Sunday.
