Chandigarh, Sept. 20 -- The Election Commission of India (ECI) has intensified its efforts to streamline the nation's electoral system, announcing the removal of 474 Registered Unrecognized Political Parties (RUPPs) from its rolls on September 18, 2025.

This action follows their failure to contest any elections for six consecutive years. Among these, 21 parties from Punjab have been deregistered. The ECI has also initiated proceedings to delist an additional 359 RUPPs nationwide, including 11 from Punjab, for non-compliance with mandatory financial reporting.

This latest move is part of an ongoing nationwide campaign launched in 2019 to ensure only active political entities retain registration status.
