Mumbai, Aug. 6 -- A special NDPS court in Mumbai awarded 15 years of Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) to a foreign national for smuggling 3.98 kg of heroin into India and also a fine of Rs 1.5 lakhs, a lawyer said here on Wednesday.

The man, identified as Mapoma Joseph Lemao, a 30-year-old South African national, was found guilty under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

The court, however, acquitted his associate, a second accused, Ramadhani Musa, who was allegedly supposed to receive the drug consignment in India. The judge cited a lack of evidence to prove Musa's involvement beyond a reasonable doubt.
