Varanasi, Sept. 21 -- Amid escalating tensions between lawyers and the police in Varanasi, Congress' Uttar Pradesh state president Ajai Rai has written a strongly-worded letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, demanding immediate intervention.

Citing the ongoing conflict as a threat to democratic values and constitutional order, Rai called upon the PM, who is also the elected MP from Varanasi, to break his "concerning silence" on the issue.

In his letter sent to PM on Saturday, Ajai Rai criticized both the state and central governments for their "insensitivity" toward the plight of lawyers in Varanasi, accusing them of remaining passive while the situation has deteriorated into open conflict.
