Lucknow, Jan. 24 -- The Congress party, which is striving to strengthen its political base in Uttar Pradesh, suffered a setback on Saturday when former regional president and senior leader Naseemuddin Siddiqui resigned from the primary membership of the party.

Siddiqui has sent his resignation to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Uttar Pradesh in-charge Avinash Pandey, and state president Ajay Rai, sources said.

The resignation is being seen as a major political blow to the Congress in a crucial state of Uttar Pradesh.
