Kolkata, Nov. 30 -- A civic volunteer posted at Basirhat police station has been arrested for allegedly extorting large sums of money from candidates by promising to leak the question paper of the West Bengal Police constable recruitment examination.

The accused, identified as Ganesh Bachar, was taken into custody following internal alerts and preliminary interrogation of several candidates.

The constable recruitment test was held on Sunday across the state. According to investigators, Ganesh allegedly claimed he could supply the question paper in advance and approached several examinees in the Basirhat area.

Police sources say he collected "lakhs of rupees" from some of them, assuring guaranteed access to the paper ahead of the exam.
