Hamirpur (HP), March 10 -- Kidney disease is causing a silent epidemic in the country, with India having the highest number of renal patients in the world, health experts warned, pointing out that cases of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) have doubled in the past decade in India and Himachal Pradesh due to rising diabetes, hypertension, and obesity.

Sharing insight on this issue after addressing a seminar on "Agony of CKD" organised by the Chamba-based Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Government Medical College on the occasion of World Kidney Day, Principal Investigator of the Association of Studies for Kidney Care, Dr Naresh Purohit, said that CKD accounts for 2-3% of all deaths in India, with approximately 1.5-2 lakh deaths annually.
