Beijing/New Delhi, April 9 -- China played an active back-channel role in bringing about a ceasefire between the United States and Iran and pushed Tehran to negotiate the ceasefire deal.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said that since the fighting began on February 28, China has worked actively to help bring about an end to the conflict and will continue playing a constructive role and making positive contribution to restoring peace in the Gulf and Middle East.
She said Foreign Minister Wang Yi made 26 phones calls to his counterparts from several countries.
China's Special Envoy on Middle East, Zhai Jun, also conducted shuttle diplomacy and travelled to Gulf and Middle East region in a mediation effort.
