Beijing, March 25 -- China on Wednesday strongly condemned an incident in Japan in which a Japanese Self-Defense Force officer broke into the Chinese embassy, calling the act a serious threat to the safety of diplomats and a violation of international law.

At a press briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the officer, identified as a second lieutenant of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force, scaled the embassy wall armed with a knife carrying an 18-centimeter blade. The individual was handed over to Japanese police, who confirmed the breach.
