Aizawl, April 20 -- With thousands of Chin refugees from Myanmar still waiting for formal recognition, the Chin Refugee Committee (CRC) in Delhi has appealed to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to accelerate the issuance of refugee identification cards.
A CRC representative said on Sunday the appeal was made during a meeting with officials from the UNHCR's protection unit in New Delhi on April 15. The committee raised concerns that a vast majority-nearly 90 percent-of Chin refugees in the capital have been issued only temporary identification documents, leaving them vulnerable and without access to basic protections.
