Bhubaneswar, Feb. 4 -- An area committee member-ranked underground CPI (Maoist) cadre, a native of Sukma district in Chhattisgarh, on Wednesday vowed to shun violence and joined the mainstream in a blow to the banned outfit in Odisha's Malkangiri district.

During the surrender, the activist, Sukhram Markam, a native of Sukma district of Chhattisgarh, also surrendered a self-loading rifle, 12 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and other articles.

The surrendered cadre pledged to renounce violence and sever all links with extremist activities. He voluntarily opted to join the mainstream of society, expressing faith in the democratic process.
