Kolkata, Aug. 1 -- In a bizarre incident, Asansol Municipal Corporation (AMC) in Burdwan district of West Bengal allegedly demanded a penalty of Rs 20 lakh from a businessman in exchange for not taking action against the demolition of illegal construction-prompting the Calcutta High Court to direct the police to initiate a probe against the civic body.

The directive came from a single-judge bench of Justice Gaurang Kanth today, who expressed serious concern over the conduct of the Trinamool Congress-run AMC.

The court questioned how a municipal authority could demand such a large sum of money while promising to overlook illegal construction.
