London, Sept. 28 -- Bruno Fernandes saw a second-half penalty saved as Manchester United lost 3-1 to Brentford, extending Ruben Amorim's troubled reign.

Manchester United's defensive frailties were exposed early when Igor Thiago pounced on chaos at the back to hand the host a two-goal advantage within 20 minutes.

Benjamin Sesko halved the deficit with his first strike in the 26th minute since his 74-million-pound switch from RB Leipzig, offering a lifeline. That chance to level came when Brentford skipper Nathan Collins dragged back Bryan Mbeumo in the box. After a lengthy delay for a VAR red card review and two home substitutions, Fernandes stepped up, only to see his effort pushed away by Caoimhin Kelleher in the 76th minute.
