Mumbai, April 9 -- In a landmark development for India's electoral process, the Bombay High Court, for the first time, permitted the checking and inspection of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) after the conclusion of elections, marking a significant judicial intervention in election transparency.

The order was passed by Justice Somasekhar Sundaresan while hearing a petition filed by senior Congress leader and former Maharashtra minister Naseem Khan, who is also a member of the Congress Working Committee. Khan had challenged the outcome of the 2024 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections, in which he was defeated by Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction) candidate Dilip Lande from the Chandivali constituency in Mumbai Suburban district.
