Mumbai, Jan. 25 -- In a major breakthrough following sustained citizen activism, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has committed to stopping the flow of untreated sewage into Powai Lake by May marking a significant step towards restoring one of Mumbai's largest and most ecologically important wetlands.

Work to divert sewage away from the 210-hectare, weed-choked lake in north Mumbai has already begun, with civic officials acknowledging that nearly 18 million litres per day of untreated sewage currently enters the lake through multiple inlets.
