Mumbai, Jan. 16 -- Trends from the counting of votes for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections on Friday indicated a clear lead for the BJP-led alliance, which crossed the majority mark as counting progressed through the morning.

According to data released by the Maharashtra State Election Commission, candidates from the BJP alliance were leading in 131 of the total 227 seats in the Mumbai civic body. Of these, 102 candidates of the Bharatiya Janata Party were ahead, while 29 candidates of its ally, the Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), were also leading.

On the opposition side, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) candidates were leading in 65 seats, while the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena was ahead in nine seats. The Congres...
