Narayanpet, Feb. 10 -- The suicide of a BJP councillor candidate in Telangana has triggered tension as municipal elections draw near.

The incident occurred in the Maktal Municipality of Narayanpet district.

According to police, Mahadevappa (48), a resident of Chanapur village in Ward No. 6 of the municipality, was contesting as a BJP councillor candidate. He allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased's wife, Sattemma, alleged that Mahadevappa was driven to take the extreme step due to harassment and intimidation by his opponents through social media.

Police said a case has been registered and an investigation is underway to ascertain the circumstances leading to his death.
