Chandrapur, Feb. 10 -- In a surprise political turn, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) captured the mayor's post in the Chandrapur Municipal Corporation on Tuesday, despite the Congress being the single largest party in the House.

BJP corporator Sangeeta Khandekar secured victory with the support of Shiv Sena (UBT).

According to sources, the mayoral election was decided by a razor-thin margin, with Khandekar polling 32 votes against 31 secured by the Congress candidate.

Shiv Sena (UBT) corporator Prashant Danav was elected deputy mayor.

The result came amid uncertainty over post-poll alignments following the fractured verdict in the January 15 civic elections.
