Pune, Feb. 15 -- Tensions flared up in Pune on Sunday over a statement reportedly made by Maharashtra Congress President Harshvardhan Sapkal that Tipu Sultan should be regarded on par with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

The remark triggered strong reactions from BJP workers who organized a protest march to the city's Congress Bhavan.

Anticipating the protest, Congress workers had already gathered in large numbers outside their party office. Sloganeering from both sides soon intensified, and the situation quickly escalated into physical clashes.
