Patna, Feb. 11 -- In a move to benefit farmers and strengthen procurement operations, the Bihar government has urged the Centre to increase the paddy procurement target for the State from 3.685 million metric tonnes to 4.5 million metric tonnes.

Replying to a Call Attention notice raised by MLA Subhash Singh in the Assembly, the Food and Consumer Protection Minister Lesi Singh noted on Wednesday that the procurement target for paddy is fixed by the Centre. For the current season, the Centre has set a target of 3.685 million metric tonnes, while in previous years the target had been around 4.5 million metric tonnes. She said the state has therefore requested the Centre to enhance the target keeping farmers' interests in mind.
