Kolkata/Siliguri, April 3 -- The West Bengal police on Friday arrested Advocate Mofakkarul Islam, said to be the mastermind behind the confinement of seven judicial officers and the subsequent attack on them two days ago in Malda district, Election Commission of India (ECI) sources said.
Mofakkarul, also a leader of AIMIM, had participated in a protest at Kaliachak on Wednesday night over the alleged deletion of names from voter lists. He addressed a large gathering from atop a vehicle, and the video of his speech later went viral on social media.
Police launched a search for him on charges of delivering an inflammatory speech and also raided his residence at Itahar in North Dinajpur district, but he remained untraceable.
