Kolkata/Siliguri, April 3 -- The West Bengal police on Friday arrested Advocate Mofakkarul Islam, said to be the mastermind behind the onfinement of seven judicial officers, and the subsequent attack on them two days ago in Malda district, Election Commission of India (ECI) sources said.

Mofakkarul was nabbed by the police at Bagdogra Airport, 16 kms from Siliguri, in North Bengal when he was trying to flee, the sources said.

The judicial officers, including three women, involved in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, were gheraoed for hours by "anti-social elements" at the Kaliachowk II Block Development Office on Wednesday.

They were freed only after midnight on Wednesday-Thursday.
