Kottayam, Aug. 13 -- Alleging that the CPI(M)-led Pinarayi Government's liquor policy has faded into insignificance 'like a watermark,' the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church pointed out that when the first Pinarayi Vijayan administration took office, Kerala had only 29 bars, whereas today the number of liquor outlets is fast approaching one thousand.

Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church primate and Malankara Metropolitan, Baselios Marthoma Mathews III Catholicos, criticised the state government, recalling that when the LDF came to power, it made grand promises such as committing to make Kerala alcohol-free, launching a mass movement for prohibition if elected, and opening schools instead of bars.
