Dhaka, Nov. 1 -- Over 3,000 leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations have been detained by the Bangladeshi police over the past ten months for taking part in flash processions across Dhaka, in what is being seen as a political manoeuvre by the interim government to corner the AL ahead of the upcoming general elections.

Speaking at a press conference in the capital, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner Talebur Rahman confirmed the arrests, saying security forces were maintaining heightened vigilance ahead of the national elections, local media reported.
