Kolkata, Sept. 8 -- The interim government of Bangladesh has allowed the export of 1,200 tonnes of hilsa to India ahead of Durga Puja, the country's commerce ministry announced today.

This year's quota is almost half of what had been permitted last year, when 2,420 tonnes of hilsa were exported to India.

In 2022, the initial clearance was for 3,000 tonnes, later revised to 2,420 tonnes. Under the latest decision, each kilogram of hilsa will be exported at a minimum price of Rs 1056.

West Bengal, in particular, has a strong demand for Padma hilsa. According to Bangladesh's 2015-18 national export policy, hilsa is listed as a conditional export item, with permissions granted selectively since 2019.
