Guwahati, Jan. 12 -- At a time when the Assam Government had to issue strict warnings to stop hunting of migratory birds and wildlife, people of Jurgaon in Morigaon has banned even the honking of vehicles and even the bells of bicycle in the village-just to protect the birds. Although sounds unbelievable, the people of the village, mostly hailing from the Tiwa community, the villagers have even stopped cutting the bamboo on their backyards just to protect the birds.
"We have been seeing this from our childhood days. Our village draws a lot of birds due to the forest cover and wetlands. There are also migratory birds who arrive in our village during a particular time of the year," said Rajesh Bordoloi, a village youth.
