Guwahati, April 9 -- Brisk polling was reported from across Assam as 17.87 per cent of the over 2.51 crore eligible electors exercised their franchise in the first two hours of the single-phase Assembly election on Thursday.

"The voter turnout was approximately 17.87 per cent as of 9 am," the Election Commission of India said.

Over 2.51 crore electors spread across 126 Assembly constituencies are eligible to choose their representatives from a pool of 722 candidates, 59 of them women, in 31.490 polling stations. Over 1.25 crore voters are women and 318 belong to the third gender.
