Aizawl, Jan. 30 -- Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Friday inaugurated an arecanut (kuhva) processing unit established by SSB Agro at Buhchangphai, a rural area in Mizoram, as the state looks to expand local processing capacity for one of its major plantation crops.
Addressing the programme, the Chief Minister said arecanut has emerged as an important source of livelihood for farmers in Mizoram. He said the state has around 30,000 hectares under arecanut cultivation, with an estimated production of about two lakh quintals during the 2024-25 agricultural year.
The government, he noted, has been supporting the expansion of arecanut cultivation through schemes such as the Handholding Scheme and the Chief Minister's Special Package.
