Vijayawada, April 6 -- Untimely rains that lashed the state during the last 48 hours caused heavy damage to crops and the death of two women in lightning strikes in different districts.

The untimely heavy rain damaged mango, cashew, tobacco and chilli crops in the state. Heavy winds that struck during the flowering time, have caused heavy damage to mango cultivators. As it was harvest time, the paddy and maize were still in the fields for drying purposes. The harvest left in the fields for drying were got drenched in untimely rain, raising concerns for the farming community in the state.

The untimely rain also caused heavy damage to the Virginia variety of tobacco crops in Prakasam, Guntur and East and West Godavari districts. Farmers at ...
