Vijayawada, Oct. 25 -- In the wake of the recent fatal road accident involving a private travel bus in Kurnool district, Road Transport Officials (RTO) conducted a special safety drive today, inspecting the fitness and documentation of private buses across the state.

The accident on Friday saw 19 passengers charred alive. Following this tragedy, the RTO officials seized 18 buses for operating in violation of rules and registered cases against a total of 289 private buses statewide.

The RTO officials also imposed Rs 7.08 lakh in penalties for failing to install fire extinguishing equipment in the buses.
