Shillong, Sept. 24 -- Another 18,000 metric tonnes of illegally mined coal have disappeared in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district, Justice (Retd) Brojendra Prasad Katakey said today.

Katakey, appointed by the Meghalaya High Court in 2022 to monitor coal mining and transportation issues in Meghalaya, said that he had asked the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills district to file an FIR and start an investigation over the missing coal.

"This missing coal is the tip of the iceberg as just 138 coal dumps have been verified by the district authorities so far. There are over 1500 coordinates identified to have mined coal illegally and kept in dumps," Katakey told UNI over phone.
