Chennai, April 9 -- A total of 305 candidates have withdrawn their papers till 5.00 PM as the process of withdrawal of nominations for the high stake April 23 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections began on Thursday, as a two decade high of 7,599 candidates have entered the fray in a five-cornered contest.

During scrutiny on Tuesday, a total of 2,467 papers were rejected and 5,132 were found in order and accepted.

On the last date for withdrawal of nominations today, so far 310 candidates have withdrawn from contest, confirming the presence of 4,828 candidates as of as of 5.00 PM in the electoral battle.

A final picture on the exact number of candidates contesting the polls, would be known by tonight as the Election Commission officials are still...
