Agartala, Feb. 27 -- In a pre-dawn operation Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Thursday demolished over a hundred illegal shops in Lake Chowmuhani market, which were built on a critical embankment of Kathakhal in the city.
While AMC authority claimed the action as development of market and public safety, opposition CPI-M and Congress termed it as 'inhuman and motivated against poor' and demanded immediate alternative arrangement for the affected vendors.
Several vendors claimed that they had been running businesses at the site for generations and were given no viable alternative before being evicted.
