New Delhi, Jan. 15 -- Indian airline companies have cancelled several flights passing over Iran, while the routes of many others have been diverted.

Air India on Tuesday said it has rerouted several flights and cancelled some services due to the emerging security situation in Iran and the subsequent closure of the country's airspace.

In a travel advisory issued on social media, the national carrier said flights overflying the region are now operating on alternative routes to ensure passenger safety. However, the airline cautioned that the rerouting may result in delays.

"Some Air India flights, where rerouting is not currently possible, are being cancelled," the airline said.
