Mumbai, Jan. 16 -- The results of the Maharashtra local body elections have thrown up a surprise with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) registering a strong surge across the state. The party, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, has taken the lead in 58 seats across 11 municipal corporations, significantly altering established political equations.

According to early trends, AIMIM has made notable gains in key urban centres. In Mumbai, the party has secured victories in three seats, while in Thane, five AIMIM candidates have emerged victorious, giving the party a visible presence in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
