Chennai, Jan. 15 -- It was a day of gripping action as Jallikattu,the bull taming sport, the first of the three events annually conductedin Madurai district of Tamil Nadu, was held at Avuniapuram on Thursday.

According to initial reports, a total of 60 people were injured.

A total of 1,000 bulls took part in the Pongal festival's first Jallikattu and550 bull tamers have registered for the event.

Of them 937 bulls were released into the arena and Balakumar of Avuniapuramemerged as the leading bull tamer, having tamed 22 bulls and bagged the firstprize--a car worth Rs eight lakhs.

C R Karthi, also of Avuniapuram, bagged the second prize taming 17 bulls,followed by Ranjith Kumar 16 and Karthik from Tiruparankundram, whotamed 14 bulls.
