Yavatmal, Feb. 4 -- At least 22 farmers died by suicide in Maharashtra's Yavatmal district in January this year, according to farmer activist Kishor Tiwari.
In a statement on Wednesday, he claimed his informarion was based on district administration data.
Tiwari, who has been documenting agrarian distress in Vidarbha for over three decades, said the figures highlight the continuing crisis faced by farmers in the region. The farmers who died by suicide belonged to various talukas including Ghatanji, Arni, Kelapur, Jhari, Mahagaon, Darwha, Umarkhed, Babulgaon, Digras, Ner, Kalamb and Ralegaon, he said.
