Shillong, Nov. 28 -- Five hundred children are among over 10,000 infected with HIV in Meghalaya, Project Director of Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS), Dr KL Iawbor said on Friday.
According to Iawbor, the prevalence of HIV in the state is no longer confined to high-risk groups and has entered the general population, especially among females.
East Jaintia Hills district in the eastern part of Meghalaya has the highest number of minors - 263 females and 244 males - infected with HIV, the MACS official said.
"Most of these children infected with the disease come from poor families," she said on Friday.
Out of the approximate 10,000 detected HIV cases, Iawbor said there are 5308 females, 5033 males, four are transgenders and 16 per cen...
