Sydney, Jan. 16 -- Major social media companies removed access to about 4.7 million accounts identified as belonging to children under 16 in the first half of December, following the introduction of Australia's social media minimum age law, according to preliminary data released by eSafety on Tuesday.

The regulatory body, which oversees online safety in Australia, said its focus has shifted from preparation to monitoring and enforcement, concentrating on platforms deemed age-restricted and those with high under-16 usage.
